Post Rhinoplasty Breathing

July 6, 2009 · Posted in Primary rhinoplasty

Hi, I am 9 days post op with my first Rhino surgery. Those who have had the procedure, how long after surgery did you get your normal breathing back. Also, how many of you had perm. breathing loss as a result of your surgery? I’m kind of stressing out right now. Need you help!! Thanks so much!

LOL, don’t stress out…yet!! I remember after my primary I thought I would never be able to breath again! It took a short while–perhaps two weeks or so? I don’t remember exactly, but I do remember it definitely was NOT immediate. In the meanwhile, I used Afrin (I used it very judiciously, because it is addictive apparently) and that really helped immensely.

    Hi there!

You’ll be stuffed up for a little bit — as a lot of that is due to swelling inside the nose. If everything heals alright, you shouldn’t have any breathing trouble down the road any more than the average joe.

Give your nose at least a month to settle in — and just take it easy. Things like ‘high salt’ foods will make you swell more as well.

For now, sit back and sip some cool lemonade or something tasty ;)

Thank you for your responses. I had a lot of swelling, I guess more than the average post op patient. At my doctor’s appt yesterday I got an Rx for Steroids to help with swelling and healing. It was a bit stressful not knowing after hearing other post op stories of people whose breathing was gradually getting better by this point. I appreciate the encouragement.
