October 19, 2009 · Posted in Primary rhinoplasty

I had a closed rhinoplasty 4 days ago and since then my nose has been completely numb how long should i expect this to last? Also when i smile i look completeley different as my top lip now covers my upper teeth where as before i had a nice smile showing all my teeth, is this due to the numbness and will this return to normal within time? Please help! anxious.

This is completely normal! Your smile should recover within 2-4 weeks (4 weeks tops!). We’ve all been there, so don’t worry! If you find you’re still numb after a month, check with your doctor. But, there are nerves that are severed during the surgery and it takes a little while for the connections to regenerate, from what I’ve been told by my own PS. Rarely, a huge columella strut also pushes down the upper lip–that can be reversed by trimming the graft. However, in a primary and a closed rhinoplasty, I highly doubt that a graft is causing this issue. Just be a little more patient and see if your smile recovers. I hope this helps!
